Q-Ride Training and Assessment Courses Information Sheet

This information sheet provides general information about Q-Ride training and assessment courses (Q-Ride). Q-Ride is a competency-based training and assessment program, designed to ensure you demonstrate the required level of knowledge and skill for each stage of the motorcycle licensing system.

There are three Q-Ride courses:

• Pre-learner course - to get an RE learner licence.

• Restricted (RE) course - to get an RE provisional or open licence.

• Unrestricted (R) course - to get an R provisional or open licence.

Applicants for a motorcycle licence who live inside a 100km radius of a Q-Ride training area must do Q-Ride. If you live outside a 100km radius you may:

• For an RE learner licence, apply for an exemption or choose to do the pre-learner course.

• For an RE or R provisional or open licence, sit a Q-SAFE riding test or choose to do Q-Ride.

Q-Ride Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to do the pre-learner course you must hold a car provisional or open licence (Qld, interstate or foreign) and have held the licence for at least one year. To be eligible to do the restricted (RE) course you must pass the motorcycle hazard perception test. You must also hold one of the following: • an RE learner licence and have held the licence for at least three months if you completed the pre-learner course or at least one year if you were exempt from the course • an interstate or foreign motorcycle learner licence and have held the licence for at least three months • a foreign motorcycle licence equivalent to an RE or R provisional or open licence • a licence with an RD condition, and a Returning Driver Certificate stating you can learn to ride a motorcycle. To be eligible to do the restricted (R) course you must hold one of the following: • an RE provisional or open licence (or interstate or foreign licence equivalent) and have held the licence for at least two years • a foreign motorcycle licence equivalent to an R provisional or open licence • a licence with an RD condition, and a Returning Driver Certificate stating you can learn to ride an R motorcycle. You can check your eligibility to do a Q-Ride course online at www.qld.gov.au/transport.

Enrolling in Q-Ride

You must demonstrate that you are eligible to do Q-Ride. You may do this by giving your Q-Ride training provider a Q-Ride Course Eligibility Certificate from the online service, or the Q-Ride training provider may ask you to complete a Declaration of Eligibility for QRide Training and Assessment. Your Q-Ride training provider may also require you to provide a licence history before accepting your enrolment. To obtain your licence history, you will need to complete a Release of Information Application (form F2121) and lodge it at a departmental customer service centre and pay the applicable fee. If you hold a foreign driver licence that is not in English, you must show a recognised translation. Important note: If you do Q-Ride when you are not eligible, for example, your driver licence is suspended or you have not held a class RE licence for two years, any Competency Declaration issued to you will be void and cannot be used to obtain a motorcycle licence.

Undertaking Q-Ride

During the course you will need to demonstrate your competency in riding a motorcycle. You must complete the course on a motorcycle relevant to the class of motorcycle licence you want to obtain. For a class RE licence, you must complete the course on a learner approved motorcycle. For a class R licence, you must complete the course on a motorcycle that is not a learner approved motorcycle. You cannot do Q-Ride on a motorcycle that has a sidecar attached or on a three wheeled motorcycle (also known as motortrikes), unless you have been granted special consideration due to a permanent physical incapacity where these are the only type of motorcycle you are able to ride. The motorcycle must also have been specifically designed by the manufacturer to have the same handling characteristics as a two wheeled motorcycle.

Getting your motorcycle licence

When you have been assessed as demonstrating the required competencies, the Q-Ride training provider will issue you with a competency declaration. This is not a motorcycle licence. Your Q-Ride training provider may notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) that you have successfully completed the course, or may tell you to present the competency declaration at a driver licence issuing centre. • If your training provider notifies TMR that you have successfully completed the course you can: o If you did the pre-learner course - take the motorcycle knowledge test online and automatically have the class RE learner added to your licence. o If you did the restricted or unrestricted courses - upgrade your licence online to an RE or R provisional or open licence. • If your training provider does not notify TMR, you must take your competency declaration to a driver licence issuing centre before you can: o If you did the pre-learner course - take the motorcycle knowledge test to obtain your RE learner licence. o If you did the restricted or unrestricted courses - upgrade your licence to an RE or R provisional or open licence. Your competency declaration is only valid for one year from the date of issue. If you do not get your RE learner licence or upgrade to an RE or R provisional or open licence within one year the declaration will expire and you will need to do Q-Ride again to obtain a new one.
