What You Should Know About a Motorbike Licence in the Gold Coast

When you’re ready to obtain your motorcycle licence, you expect to follow these steps to be successful.

  • Your eligibility depends on an open car or provisional licence for a minimum of one year. The first step to take is to complete the two-day pre-learner course. In total, you’ll have to spend about 12.5 hours on a proficiency -based Q-ride teaching course. The final step to obtaining your learner's bike licence is completing the knowledge test. This test involves answering 30 relevant questions. After you’ve passed, you can pay the related fee to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) either in person or online.
  • To advance to the next level, you need to spend at least three months practising. During this period you are required to complete the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) online through the TMR website. After the minimum three month period and completing the HPT, you’re entitled to apply for the Restricted Licence or the RE Bike License in QLD. You can’t ride without supervision during this period which is why you require a qualified instructor to assist. When you’re ready, you can complete the one-day restricted licence course, which lasts 7.5 hours. This course develops and assesses your skills within the training range and out on road with our experienced trainers guiding you. Once you complete the course, you’ll be able to upgrade your Learner Licence to a Restricted Licence. To make it official, you can present yourself in person or online to TMR for the upgrade.
  • If you hold an open car licence, you’ll receive an RE Open Licence which doesn’t require you to display ‘P’ plates. However, if you have a provisional car licence, you’ll obtain an RE Provisional Licence and would have to display corresponding ‘P’ plates. Alternatively, you can wear a vest with a clear and visible capital ‘P’ with the appropriate colour on the back.
  • After achieving your RE License in QLD, you can get out on the road and have fun. However, your learning shouldn’t end, and you can gain further knowledge from working with a reliable instructor. You must hold the RE License for a minimum of two years if you want to upgrade to an R Class unrestricted licence. After 12 months of having the RE Licence, you can carry a pillion passenger, but you can only ride a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) bike.
  • When you’ve held the RE Licence for two years, you automatically qualify for the R Class Learner's Permit. There aren’t limits to the engine size that you can ride regardless of it being a two or three-wheel motorcycle. You can begin gaining experience with riding an R Class motorcycle, but you must display an ‘L’ plate and have somebody ride with you. They must be an R Class licenced rider for a minimum of 12 months experience as a supervisor. Enrol yourself into the half-day R Class licence course, and upon successful completion, you can ride any motorcycle you desire and carry pillions. The final step involves making it official at the TMR office, and after this step, you don’t require a supervisor when you ride.

Benefits of Obtaining an RE Motorcycle Licence in QLD

If you’re planning on travelling via a motorcycle regularly, you require an RE Motorcycle Licence. Apart from this being a requirement, you can enjoy several benefits from obtaining a licence to ride a bike.

  • When you finally obtain a rider's licence, it’s proof that you’re a safe driver who understands the rules of the road in correlation with riding a motorcycle. This proof will directly impact the premiums you have to pay for insurance. Insurance companies evaluate your risk as a rider based on your history and qualifications. Possessing the necessary licence demonstrates that you’re more than capable of handling a bike correctly, making it safe for you and others on the road. It signifies the fact that you’ve undergone the proper training, which makes you a responsible rider. For this reason, the insurance company may consider you a low risk resulting in a lower premium.
  • With the licence in hand, you can ride freely anywhere in the country. If a traffic officer pulls you over, you won’t have to worry about anything - unless you’ve broken a traffic law. Earning the licence grants you the freedom to ride on public roads.
  • As a motorcyclist, you’re one of the most vulnerable drivers on the road. Typically, highways are the most dangerous for motorcycles; however, suburban streets pose an equal threat to you and your bike. Obtaining your licence means that you’re aware of the basic moves to ride defensively with other road users in mind. Apart from keeping yourself safe, this knowledge assists in creating a better driving environment for others.
  • A crucial factor in driving and riding is confidence. You must be sure of what you’re doing on the road. Indecision leads to errors and then accidents. However, when you’ve worked diligently to obtain your RE Licence, it provides you with a deep sense of confidence. Consequently, you will react appropriately to potentially stressful and dangerous situations.
